Students with Disabilities Workshop

Presented By:

Karl Laves, Counseling & Testing Center Assistant Director

Who are Disabled Students :

Students with disabilities are first and foremost students; you know, those other humans who come to our campus to learn, love, play, grow, etc. They also have something about their bodies that makes it different, and sometimes harder, to interact with others.

Disabilities include physical differences (such as paralysis), sensory differences (such as blindness), and even emotional differences (such as severe social anxiety). These disabilities by definition interfere with the pursuit of an education whether they affect actual learning (information processing) or affect the student's ability to move to and from class.

Disabilities are diagnoses and treated by a variety of professionals including physicians, physical therapists, and the helping professions (e.g. counselors, psychologists). Students with disabilities often receive assistance from other service providers like Vocational Rehabilitation.

Our campus also has an office, the Office for Students with Disabilities, which serves as the on-campus service for students. This office provides a variety of services including documenting disabilities and negotiating accommodations for students with instructors, residence halls, and the campus environment in general.
