Faculty Support Ideas :

Campus Services
Undecided students can go to Career Services (745-2691) or the Counseling Center (745-3159) and take an interest inventory to help guide them toward a major. They can also visit departments on campus to obtain further information on a major or they can schedule an appointment to speak with someone who works in the field.

Reassurance
Faculty can also reassure students that taking time in making a decision about a major or future career is worth it. They should consider all their choices and explore different options.

Grades
Grades can influence a student's major so faculty need to keep grades in mind while advising. Send students to the Learning Center or tell them to seek tutoring if they need help in bring their grades up. The low grades may be a result of disinterest rather than motivation and helping a student find the right career or major may alone cause higher grades.

UC 101 Courses
Check into teaching a Freshman Experience UC 101 course and get to know some of these freshman and sophomore students. As a UC 101 instructor, you will receive an opportunity to be an advisor for the undecided students enrolled in your class.

Advising Tools
Different students need different levels of advising. Some students only want a signature while some need encouragement and direction. Either way an advisor needs to have the tools for advisement. These include:

  • A schedule bulletin
  • Transcript & transfer credits
  • A copy of the student's degree form
  • Knowledge of WKU's graduation/degree granting structure
  • A recent course catalog
