Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA)

Faculty are reminded that the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act
(FERPA) prohibits the public posting of grades by students' names or
Social Security Number.   The federal Family Policy Compliance Office,
which administers FERPA, recommends that if grades are posted that one
of the following methods be used:

1.    Use a code name known only to the student and faculty member
2.    Use a randomly assigned number known only to the student and
          faculty member
3.    Use the last 4 digits of the students' SSN

Under no circumstances should any list using one of these methods be in
order by the students' actual last names.

If you have any questions about the FERPA policy, I will be pleased to
respond.
