The Millennial Student in College: A Faculty Perspective
W Feb. 20 @ 3-4p in DUC 210A   BSCT Approval: No
Presenter:
Monica Burke, Assoc. Director Office of Diversity Programs

Description: The students who are entering college today have characteristics and expectations that present some unique challenges to those of us engaged with guiding them through college, especially those of us from previous generational cohorts.  With the assumptions and research findings about the Millennial generation, this session will discuss potential influences and considerations associated with teaching and working with today's college student.

Collaboration & Cooperative Learning:  Helping Students Connect
W Feb. 27 @ 1:30-2:30p in DUC A-210  BSCT Approval:  Yes
Panelists: Blair Thompson, Communication; Michelle Lane, Management; Dawn Hall, Academic Support BGCC; Quentin Hollis, Liberal Arts & Science BGCC

Description: A faculty panel will discuss multiple techniques used to incorporate collaborative learning into both classroom and online classes, plus research done on student academic support both inside and outside the classroom -- and how collaborative learning relates to student learning and retention.

Is this going to be on the test?” Student perceptions of instruction and what to do about them
M Mar 24 @ 3-4 pm in GCC 100    BSCT Approval:  No
Presenters:
Carrie Pritchard, Psychology and Mac McKerral, Journalism & Broadcasting

Description: The Rolling Stones sang "You can't always get what you want, but if you try sometimes, well you might find, you get what you need."  In order to achieve learning, what do our students need and want?  Although students' goals may seem vastly different from our own, it may be possible to bridge the gap.  That is, maybe in giving students what they need (i.e., good instruction) they will also get what they want (i.e., better test preparation.)

Strategies for Constructing & Presenting Course Syllabi
T Apr 1 @ 11:30-12:30 at FaCET, *Brown bag Lunch   BSCT Approval:  Yes
Presenter:
Blair Thompson, Communication

Description: Based on his research, Dr. Thompson will discuss innovative communication strategies instructors at WKU can utilize when constructing and presenting their syllabi. These include communication strategies instructors can use to balance the tension between showing students they are caring, warm and friendly while simultaneously demonstrating they are serious, task-oriented and evaluative as they present their syllabi. Additionally, the presentation will offer strategies aimed at focusing students' attention (leading to retention) during the presentation of the syllabus.
