Quotations for College Faculty:

Quotation selection and categorization reflects my particular sensibilities and have been found in a wide variety of sources.

Categorization

  • Teaching categories: I have endeavored to avoid favoring any particular point of view. The syllabus category reflects items I thought might be useful for syllabi. They are perhaps more arbitrarily chosen than other categories. The assessment category reflects my disciplinary interest in assessment, and might occasionally seem more obscure than simply being about college exams.
  • Research and Service categories are not as well-developed as they were not the highest priority for the project. “Power” and Success” are crude metaphors for committee work, for example.
  • Thinking categories reflect more particular aspects of human achievement. The thinking category differs from the intelligence category by focusing on the process or result of thought while the intelligence category is more a collection of opinions about smartness as a trait. There is, of course, overlap.

Searching

The categories do overlap so you might find the same quote in several locations. If you are seeking a particular quote, select the Search button at the top and follow the directions on that page. It is possible to display all 3,000 quotes on the Search page. The database of quotations is shared across several quotation websites with different themes.

Sorting

Quotes are sorted alphabetically by the quote, with punctuation marks first (e.g., …), then numbers, then text. To submit additional quotes or to make corrections, click on the mail link in the lower left.

This is a very large database and your screen may flicker while a page is loading. I advise against printing out the pages unless you have many sheets of paper to spare.

We hope you find this to be a useful resource. Simply reading through a collection is an enlightening process.
