PHYSICAL THERAPIST

Physical therapists (PT) work with people of all ages. They evaluate and treat persons whose ability to function is impaired or threatened due to disease or injury and help patients face the challenges of recovery. They use exercise, massage, heat, cold, water, ultrasound, electrical stimulation and other treatments to improve circulation and strengthen muscles to help return function and extend the range of motion. Physical therapists write treatment plans, which describe the treatments to be given, the purpose and expected outcome. As treatment continues, they document the progress and may reevaluate the patients and modify treatments if necessary. Physical therapists show patients how to use items, such as crutches, prostheses and wheelchairs in order to get around. They may consult with doctors or receive orders from them. Physical therapists need patience when working with patients and creativity when adapting exercises for individual needs.

Education

Admission to physical therapy programs is extremely competitive. A bachelors degree is required to enter the field. However, the American Physical Therapy Association encourages masters or doctoral degrees. Many universities no longer offer a bachelors degree in physical therapy, but a masters degree is the entry level preparation.

Registration/Certification/Licensure

Upon completion of an accredited educational program, one is eligible to take any state board examination for physical therapy licensure. PTs are licensed by the Kentucky State Board of Physical Therapy.

Employment Opportunities

Physical therapists work in hospitals, rehabilitation facilities, industry, private clinics, sports medicine, school systems, nursing homes, home health agencies and other health care environments. Employment opportunities and salaries are declining in the current managed care environment.
