Home health aides, while
under the supervision of a registered nurse, provide personal care for
patients in their homes. Their duties include, but are not limited to,
the following:
Helping the patient with
bathing, care of mouth, skin and hair;
Helping the patient to
the bathroom or in using a bedpan;
Helping the patient in
and out of bed and assisting with ambulation;
Assisting with medication
ordinarily self-administered that has been specifically ordered by a physician;
and
Performing incidental
household services as are essential to the patient's health care at home.
Education
Most individuals that desire
to be a home health aide receive on-the-job training from the agency that
hires that individual.

Employment Opportunities
Home health aides are employed
at home health agencies, hospitals, public health and welfare departments
and community volunteer agencies. Some aides are self-employed and have
no agency affiliation. They accept clients, set fees and arrange work schedules
on their own.
