EMERGENCY MEDICAL TECHNICIAN
An Emergency Medical Technician-Basic
(EMT-B) is educated and trained to provide basic patient assessments, extrication,
basic life support emergency care and transportation of injured and ill
patients. An Emergency Medical Technician-Paramedic (EMT-P) is educated
and trained to provide patient assessment, advanced life support, emergency
care and transportation of injured or ill patients.
Education
According to guidelines by the
U.S. Department of Transportation and Kentucky certification standards,
the EMT-B course is 121+ hours of lecture, discussion and skills practice.
An EMT-P course is 1200-1500 hours of lecture, discussion and skills practice
and working in numerous assigned areas of medical care. Students may also
receive an associate degree in paramedicine from the Bowling Green Community
College of Western Kentucky University and Eastern Kentucky University.
Registration/Certification/Licensure
Successful completion of the
National Registry of EMT's examination and satisfactory evaluation of skills
proficiency leads to certification as an EMT-B and EMT-P by the Kentucky
Cabinet for Health Services in Frankfort.
Salary
$22,800-28,000
Employment Opportunities
Individuals with an EMT-B or
EMT-P Certificate may work in municipal fire, police or rescue squad departments
as well as private ambulance services and hospitals.
