Please join us in congratulating Dr. Ann Beth Presley, a Textiles and Apparel Merchandising alum,  who has been selected as one of 24 recipients from North and South America for the Attingham Trust Summer School class of 2009!  The Attingham Trust is an educational charitable trust that offers specialised study courses, primarily for people professionally engaged in the field, on country houses, their collections and settings, and on the history and contents of English royal palaces.

According to a press release dated April 10, 2009, from the United States Department of Agriculture, a WKU Family and Consumer Sciences Education graduate, Dr. Janey K. Thornton,  was named Deputy Undersecretary for Food, Nutrition and Consumer Services.  Dr. Thornton will provide policy direction for the Food and Nutrition Service (FNS), which administers the national food assistance programs, and the Center for Nutrition Policy and Promotion (CNPP), which "develops and promotes dietery guidance that links scientific research to the nturition needs of consumers."  Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack says of her, "Dr. Thornton has an outstanding, hand-on background in childhood nutrition.  She is a leader in this area....  I look forward to working with Dr. Thornton as we tackle challenges of childhood obesity, childhood hunger, and school-focused nutrition."

The CFS department is proud to announce that Textile and Apparel Management graduate, Laura Planck, (aka LK), has been chosen as one of the top six designers in the St. Louis Design Week Bakers Project: Design! competition.  According to the Project: Design! website, this competition is held to support "up-and-coming designers by giving them the exposure and tools they need to go from runway to retail."  LK and the other five designers chosen now get the opportunity to show their lines at a high-profile runway show at the St. Louis Fashion week, March 23-28, 2009, and will recieve photo and video coverage of the show on stlouisfashionweek.com, and PR services to promote the runway show.  The prize they are trying to capture is a $20,000 website created by web designers 963 Collective to showcase the winning line, and a $10,000 photo shoot of the winning collection using top international models from NEXT and Mother Model Management with makeup by MAC and hair by L'Oreal Professionnel.





A new minor in Meeting, Convention, and Exposition Planning was approved by the WKU Board of Regents on Janaury 30, 2009.  This minor will be available for students to declare in the Spring, 2009 semester.  Students will take CFS-171 Introduction to Management in the Hospitality Industry,  CFS-313   Practicum (must be in Meeting, Convention, and Exposition Planning), CFS-375 Meeting and Convention Management, REC-306 Recreation Program Planning, MKT-325   Personal Selling and an additional 6 hours of selected electives chosen from courses in CFS, Communications, Horticulutre, Management, Marketing, Psychology or Recreation.  For more information or to speak with an advisor for this minor, please contact the department.
