Dr.
Amy S. Hood , Visiting Assistant Professor, in the Family and Consumer Sciences Department, teaches several courses
in the Child Studies area. Dr. Hood has
worked with Head Start and child care for 16 years and has an extensive
educational background in early childhood development.
Dr. Hood obtained
her
Bachelor of Science degree in Child Development from Murray State
University, a
Master’s degree in Early Childhood from Western Kentucky University,
and her
doctorate in Child and Youth Studies from NOVA Southeastern University
in 2003.
Dr.
Hood began her career at WKU Child Care Consortium as a pre-school Head
Start
teacher and later became the Education Coordinator for the Head Start
and child
care program. Dr. Hood began her work
with infants and toddlers when she implemented child care for children
birth to
three within the WKU Child Care Consortium.
In 1996, when Early Head Start was first funded, she assumed the
responsibilities of Early Head Start Coordinator of the Wave I program
and
worked to incorporate the Head Start Performance Standards into the
infant and
toddler program. After leaving her
position as Education/Early Head Start Coordinator with the program,
she became
the Infant/Toddler Specialist at T/TAS in 1998 and provided training
and
technical assistance to many Early Head Start programs and their child
care
partners in the eight states of Region IV.
In July 2003, Dr. Hood became the Professional Development
Specialist
for the Child Care Resource and Referral (CCR&R) where she oversees
the
KIDS NOW scholarship opportunities in the Barren River Area, as well as
supervises the training events sponsored by the CCR&R.
In
2003, Dr. Hood began teaching at the University and has taught several
of the
courses within the Associates and Bachelor degree programs. Her teaching experiences include courses such
as CFS 192, Introduction to Working With Children and Families. She has taught CFS 192 as an on-line course,
as well as Face-to-Face. She has also
taught CFS 291, Administration of Children and Families; CFS 193,
Curriculum
Development for Young Children; and IECE 493 Assessment of Children in
Early
Education.
During
the 2005 Fall semester Dr. Hood will be utilizing the Interactive Video
Services to teach CFS 192 between the campus’s in Bowling Green
and
Glasgow, KY. Dr. Hood will also be
teaching CFS 295, Curriculum Development for Infants and
Toddlers. This is a newly established
course that is
required of students in the IECE Associates degree and the Child
Studies
Bachelors degree programs. Dr. Hood
teaches several of the courses necessary for the Kentucky Directors
Credential
and can assist any interested persons with the process of obtaining
that
credential. Dr. Hood has extensive
knowledge and experience with state child care licensing requirements,
the
national CDA process and the Kentucky Commonwealth Child Care
Credential and
can provide information on those regulations and processes to
individuals who
are interested.
Dr.
Hood continues her work with Head Start and child care as she provides
training
sessions on the national level for Early Head Start and other national
conferences such as NAEYC and NHSA. Dr. Hood provides local training to
Head
Start and Child Care within the state and regionally as well, traveling
to
other states to do individual sessions.
Dr. Hood has also written articles in several child care
publications
and local newspapers.
Dr. Hood holds a Level 5 Kentucky Trainer Credential, is
a Master Trainer for the Training Into Practice Project (TIPP), is
certified in
all four of the Program for Infant and Toddler Caregiver (PITC)
Training
Modules, is pursuing re-certification with the National Parks and
Recreation to
renew her Playground Safety Certification, and with the National
Association
for the Education for Young Children (NAEYC) to renew her validator
certification.
