The Math Course Student-Placement Chart *
Students can easily use the below displayed Mathematics Placement Chart as a "guide" in determining eligibility to register for certain mathematics courses. It is emphasized that IN ADDITION to satisfying the MATH ACT and MPE scores displayed in the Placement Chart, the High School (hs) Requirements Chart (at bottom, right corner) must also be used; additionally, certain High School Math Course Performance Levels must also be satisfied as detailed in the Mathematics Placement Criteria appearing in the presentation frame following the illustrations located below these charts. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- * This table was provided under the auspices of Suzanne Britt and Linda Fitzpatrick.

ILLUSTRATIONS: --

(1) Imagine that Student-1 has the following scores: MATH ACT=19 and MPE=15.
Now, follow down the chart entries under column figure #19 until reaching
row figure #15 to find

. Next, inspect the High School Requirements
chart and note the "color coded course numbers." Note that the chart entry

displays a "text color match" indicating a (hs)-requirement of "Two years of high school
algebra," as well as the given MATH ACT and MPE scores.

(2) Imagine that Student-2 has currently completed Math-116 with an grade of "C." Now, inspect the Current Course chart: follow down the chart entries under column label "Math 116 / Math116E" until reaching "row label C." There is seen chart entry . Hence, Student-2 is eligible to register for Math-117 or Math-119.

MATHEMATICS PLACEMENT CRITERIA
___________________________________________________________________

To be qualified to take Mathematics 116 you should have

(1) two years of high school algebra and either

(a) an algebra score of at least 14 on the Math Placement Exam or

(b) a Math ACT score of at least 22 and a GPA of at least 3.0 in high school algebra.

OR (2) DMA 096C (Math 096 or Math 100) with a grade of C or better.

NOTE: If you qualify to enroll in Math 116 and you meet any of the following conditions, you must
select a section that meets MTWRF (i.e. Math 116E).

(1)       MPE score of 14 or higher, but Math ACT score below 18
            (2)       Math ACT score of 22 or higher, but MPE score below 14
            (3)       Repeating Math 116 to remove a D, F, or W
            (4)       Received a grade of C in DMA 096C (Math 096 or Math 100)
            (5)       Need extra help in mathematics

To be qualified to take Mathematics 117 you should have

(1) four years of high school mathematics from the pre-college curriculum, including two years of algebra and geometry (or Advanced Integrated Math 1, 2 and 3),
and

(a) an algebra score of at least 18 on the Math Placement Exam and
(b) a Math ACT score of at least 22 and a GPA of at least 3.0 in high school
mathematics.

OR (2) Math 116 with a grade of C or better. ___________________________________________________________________

To be qualified to take Mathematics 118 you should have

(1) three years of high school mathematics from the pre-college curriculum, including two years of algebra and geometry (or Advanced Integrated Math 1, 2 and 3),

and

a) an algebra score of at least 18 on the Math Placement Exam and
b) a Math ACT score of at least 22 and a GPA of at least 3.0 in high
school mathematics.

OR (2) DMA 096C (Math 096 or Math 100) with a grade of A. ___________________________________________________________________

To be qualified to take Mathematics 119 you should have

(1) four years of high school mathematics from the pre-college curriculum, including two
years of algebra and geometry (or Advanced Integrated Math 1, 2 and 3),

and either

a) an algebra score of at least 20 on the Math Placement Exam and a Math ACT score of at least 22, or
b) a Math ACT score of at least 26 and a GPA of at least 3.0 in high school mathematics.

OR (2) Math 116 or 118 with a grade of C or better. ___________________________________________________________________

To be qualified to take Mathematics 122 you should have

(1)       four years of high school mathematics from the pre-college curriculum, including two
                       years of algebra and geometry (or Advanced Integrated Math 1, 2 and 3) and a course
                       that  includes trigonometry,

        and either

a) an algebra score of at least 20 on the Math Placement Exam and a Math ACT score
                            of at least 22, or
                        b) a Math ACT score of at least 27 and a GPA of at least 3.0 in high school
                            mathematics.

OR (2) Math 117 or 118 with a grade of C or better. ___________________________________________________________________

To be qualified to take Mathematics 126 you should have

OR (2) Math 117 or 118 with a grade of C or better. ___________________________________________________________________

Note #1: If a student's MPE score is below 6, he or she should enroll in DMA 055C at the Community College.
Note #2: If a student's program does not require algebra, he or she may enroll in Math 109. ( Spring 2005)
