Position #02 Announcement

The Department of Mathematics at Western Kentucky University invites applications for a tenure-track position in Mathematics Education starting August 2008 at the Assistant Professor or Associate Professor level. (A second position is also being advertised. Candidates who wish to be considered for both positions must apply separately for each position.)

Qualifications: A Doctorate in Mathematics Education with a minimum of 18 hours of graduate-level mathematics courses is required. The successful candidate must show evidence of excellence in teaching, potential for research in mathematics education, commitment to outreach in K-12 schools, and effective communication skills. Teaching experience in grades K-12 and experience in web-based learning are desirable. Salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Duties: The successful candidate will be expected to teach undergraduate and graduate courses in mathematics for preservice and inservice teachers. S/he will be active in mathematics education research and in grant writing. S/he will cooperate with other faculty members to review and revise mathematics courses for teachers at all levels, to recruit prospective mathematics teachers, and to support the UTeach grant for mathematics and science.

The Department of Mathematics is one of nine departments in the Ogden College of Science and Engineering. The department about 40 faculty members, three-fourths of whom are active in research and have published widely in pure and applied mathematics journals. Mathematics degrees offered by the department include the Bachelor of Arts degree, the Master of Science degree for students preparing for further graduate studies or careers in industry, and the Master of Arts degree for secondary teachers.
