The Algebra Seminar will meet tomorrow, April 5 at 3:00 pm in TCCW 305. Jean-Claude Evard will be speaking on some of his new research. The title of the talk is "A faster way to find all of the Goldbach's partitions of an even integer greater than 2." An abstract follows. Hope to see you there!
Molly W. Dunkum, Ph.D.
======================================================================= According to the definition used in recent papers, a Goldbach's partition of an even integer n is a pair of primes p and q such that p + q = n. I will present a way to find all such partitions for any given even integer n > 2 that is faster than any primitive method. To my knowledge, and according to a message posted on MathForum, nothing has been published in this direction so far. The method that I will present is only the first step of a new approach to the study of Goldbach's partitions. So, far, there are no difficulties in sight. It seems that considerable improvements can be obtained in a very short time. Notably, I will show on a specific example that we can apply the inclusion-exclusion principle to obtain the exact number of Goldbach's partitions for this specific example. The future extension of this example will require results hidden in the proof of the Chinese Remainder Theorem. I will also present a way to estimate the probability that a given even integer n has exactly k Goldbach's partitions using a hypergeometric distribution. Then we can use the well known formula to get an estimation of the expected value of the number of Goldbach's partitions in terms of the parameters of this hypergeometric distribution. In addition, there are possibilities for very safe and very useful undergraduate research on this topic.

Dear Colleagues: -- We will have a colloquium talk this Friday 3:00pm-3:50pm, room 369. Dr. Peter Dragnev (Indiana-Purdue University, Fort Wayne) will talk about: Minimal Energy Points on the Unit Sphere which is a joint work with Dr. E. B. Saff. If you enjoyed the presentation of Dr. Saff at our Symposium you will surely enjoy this talk, too. Please plan to attend. Abstract: The "uniform" distribution of many points on the unit sphere is highly non-trivial problem with applications throughout the whole spectrum of modern science. Whether one studies electrons in equilibrium from Physics, large fullerene compounds from Chemistry, orifices of pollen grain from Biology, or data encoding from Computer Science, one arrives at spherical arrangements of points that minimize some energy functional. In this talk we shall make a short survey of the various problems in the literature and will focus on new results concerning the separation properties of the minimal configurations.

The algebra seminar will meet tomorrow, September 20, at 4pm in TCCW 305. I will continue to speak on torsion free covers, this time for the category q_2. Hope to see you there.
Best regards,

07 - SEP - 2005 //
The TOPOLOGY SEMINAR meets Tuesdays, 2:30 in TCCW 307, every other week. Our first meeting is September 20. Claus Ernst will speak on Hyperbolic Geometry.  This semester we will be mostly concerned with the Geometry and Topology of 3-Manifolds. The seminar is open to all. Our talks, we hope, will be entertaining to the enlightened and comprehensible to non-specialists. The latter being more important. I would especially like to encourage graduate students to attend.

Everyone is invited to the first meeting of the Algebra Seminar on Tuesday, September 6. We will meet in TCCW 305 at 4:00 pm. During the first two or three lectures, I will be speaking on torsion free covers for objects in the category R-mod and other (more interesting) categories.  (If this is the first time I've contacted you about the seminar AND you would like to continue to receive these seminar announcements, please let me know. Thanks!)

Dear Colleagues,
I will be giving the next two lectures in the Number Theory Seminar.  The title of my first talk is
"A special value of the degree-2 L-function of a modular form".  I will try to make the talk reasonably accessible and introduce appropriate methods as needed.  All are welcome.
Dominic Lanphier

10 - APR - 2005 //
Dear colleagues,
There will be a few student presentations during the remainder of the semester.  The first talk is by Noah Turner this Friday at 2:30.  The times and titles will be kept updated in the display case outside of the
main office and also at  http://www.wku.edu/~david.neal/498/   I hope you can attend some of the presentations.
Sincerely,

Hello:
Just wanted to inform you that the Annual Spring PME/Departmental Awards banquet has been set for Monday, April 25 at 6:30 pm at Ryan's Steakhouse....
There is a great deal going in the department and on campus, and this date appears to have the least amount of conflicts.
Please mark this date on your calendar and plan to attend to honor our departmental award winners and PME graduating members and initiates.

I will be giving the next two lectures in Number Theory Seminar on the Mondays of 4/4/2004 and 4/11/2004. The seminar meets at 2:30-3:45PM in Room TCCW 301.  The title of my talk is " L function for GSp(4)".  I will keep the talk as non technical as possible although some familiarity with the infinite dimensional representations of Lie groups will be assumed.  All are welcome.

VISITING SCHOLAR SEMINAR ANNOUNCEMENT: --

Dr. Homeira Pajoohesh, Univesity College Cork, Ireland will present the seminar title
“Partial Metrics and Metrics with a Base Point” at 3:30 Tuesday, April 5, TCCW 369.
Refreshments in the lounge at 3:15.

Abstract: -- A partial metric on a set is a metric except the distance from a point to itself need not be zero. In this talk we show that a partial metric on a set X can be represented by a metric over X, together
with a base point in X. Thus we show that a partial metric is essentially a metric together with a skewed view of that space from the base point.

18 - FEB - 2005 //
