WESTERN KENTUCKY UNIVERSITY
HOST TO MATHEMATICS MEETING
WESTERN served as host to the Southeastern Section Meeting of the American Mathematical Society the weekend of March 18-19.  The conference center for this meeting was the Mass Media & Technology Hall facility. The Department of Mathematics was extremely proud and honored to have an opportunity to serve as host for this important mathematical event.  Our department owes a debt of gratitude to its former Head, Dr. Paul Hill, for his essential role in arranging this opportunity for Western to serve as host for this regional AMS conference.

The MMTH Headquarters for this event definitely provided our guests with a beautiful and comfortable environment which is conveniently furnished with the latest computer technology.  Additional details regarding this AMS conference, which had international representation, are presented in the below displayed "showcase frame ."


Western Kentucky University  played host for the 2005 Spring Southeastern Section Meeting of the American Mathematical Society on March 18-19.  Over 300 mathematicians from 40 states and 16 countries convened at the University for this meeting.  

Department of Mathematics  participation in the meeting included: --
  • Six talks by faculty in the University’s Department of Mathematics. Those speakers were: Dr. David Benko, Dr. Daniel C. Biles, Dr. Jean-Claude Evard, Dr. Bruce Kessler, Dr. Lan Nguyen, and Dr.Tom Richmond.

  • Three mathematics faculty members were co-authors of talks. Co-authors were: Dr. Ferhan Merdivenci Atici, Dr. Claus Ernst, and Dr. Dominic Lanphier.

  • Twelve mathematics department faculty members organized sessions on nine areas of research. Those session organizers were:  Dr. Ferhan Merdivenci Atici, Dr. David Benko, Dr. Daniel C. Biles, Dr. Claus Ernst, Dr. Jens E. Harlander,
    Dr. Bruce Kessler, Dr. Dominic Lanphier, Dr. Lan Nguyen, Dr. Bettina Richmond, Dr.Tom Richmond,
    Dr. Heather Russell, and Dr. Nilabh Sanat.

  • Mathematics graduate student participations included:  Presentations by both Asli Guldurdek and Jamie Johnson.

Participation in the meeting  by university faculty from outside Mathematics included: --
  • Computer Science: Dr. Uta Ziegler was co-author of a talk, and Dr. Mustafa Atici organized a session.

  • Economics:  Dr. Alex Lebedinsky was co-author of a talk which was presented at the meeting.
