Mission Statement:

Student Support Services at Western Kentucky University is a federally funded program which provides academic advisement, personal counseling, tutoring and other services designed to help students adjust to campus life, succeed academically and graduate from a post-secondary institution.

Operational and Unifying Principles-

* Encourage campus involvement

 

Eligibility:

Undergraduate students with academic potential that meet financial and educational criteria set by the United States Department of Education qualify for participation. In addition, students who need academic support because of physical and learning disabilities may be eligible for program services.

 

Academic Advising:

Counselors provide pre-registration and drop-add counseling, assistance in developing course schedules and realistic course loads.

 

Personal Counseling:

Counselors help students in the transition from secondary to post-secondary education. They also assist re-entry and late-entry students adjust to the academic environment, aid students in clarifying goals and setting realistic objectives, and counsel with students who have specific personal problems.

 

Tutorial Services:

Peer Tutoring is available in over 75 courses to help students with their studies. Tutors are provided at no cost to program participants. Group tutoring is also available for both sections of Western Civilization and Introduction to Freshman English. To apply for a tutor, program participants should see their counselor for an application.

 

Access to Cultural Events:

Students in the program may request free tickets to certain special campus and community events. Contact Kim Whalen to find out what events qualify.

 

Services for Students with Disabilities:

In coordination with the Office of Equal Opportunities/ADA Services, the program offers individual assistance to qualified students in need of accommodations. Note Takers, audiovisual equipment, support groups, and alternative testing procedures are available as needed.

 

University Experience 175:

Each fall semester, program staff members will teach sections of University Experience 175 restricted to Student Support Services participants.

 

The Next Program:

The newest component to Student Support Services, Next Program is designed to help incoming students adjust with cultural, educational and social programs.

 

Scholarships:

The program conducts an annual scholarship competition, $250.00 scholarships are awarded to outstanding participants who have achieved success and demonstrated a true commitment to Student Support Services and their studies.
