| The
Environmental Education Endorsement has the purpose
of providing persons interested in environmental education
the opportunity
to have training that meets national standards developed by
the North American Assocation for Environmental Education.
These standards have been adopted by the Kentucky Education
Professional Standards Board. This endorsement allows persons
with a teaching certificate to add this to their teaching certificate.

• ENVE
560 - Investigating and Evaluating Environmental Issues - Specifically
designed for teachers and other educators, course focuses
on the identification and evaluation of specific environmental
issues, leading to possible environmental/service action
projects by their students, with attention to the potential
outcomes of such projects on the physical environment, other
humans, and other living things.
It meets January 30, February
27, and April 17, plus final's day (TBA) from 8 a.m. - 5 p.m., in Jones-Jaggers
Hall centertorium. You do not have to
have a course pass to register. The CRN# is 34320.

Strategies in Environmental Education"

For
over 25 years a workshop/course has been offered at Land
Between the Lake jointly by Western Kentucky University and
Murray State University. As
in the past, the workshop will be headquartered at
Brandon Spring Group Camp and will utilize much of
the 170,000 acres at LBL as an outdoor learning laboratory.
Daytime and evening activities will focus on increasing
teachers' understanding of both the natural and cultural
world, with an emphasis on how to translate that knowledge
and appreciation to preK-12 students. This experience
is appropriate for formal and nonformal eductors of
all subject areas. It will emphasize instructional
strategies
appropriate
for all facets of the school curriculum, including
science, social studies, math, languages arts, fine
arts, health, physical education, business education,
and family consumer science.
The
grant acquired from the Council on Postsecondary Education
will support participants in this program. The grant
will
cover
eligible participants'
room and board expenses. In addition, participants
will receive a $300 stipend and approximately
$400 worth of materials will be provided to each participant
for participating in the program. Graduate credit is
available for this program from WKU under ENVE 580
or ENVE 585, depending on the needs of your program.
Permission of the instructor is required for admittance
to either of these courses.

of the two university regions will be selected
for this experience. To be considered,
one must apply for admission by May 1, 2009.
You will be notified by May 10, 2009, as to your
acceptance in the program. You must complete the
appication form, and if accepted, you will need
to send us a deposit of $75 (made out to WKU).
Those who are accepted will get that check back
upon arrival at LBL on June 13th. |

PROJECT
FOOD, LAND AND PEOPLE (FLP) helps
people better understand the interrelationships among
agriculture, the environment, and people of the world. Available
through a training workshop, FLP includes lessons
for Grades preK–12. The lesson format includes
subject areas addressed, skills used, objectives,
and step-by-step procedures.
You
may request the Center to facilitate a workshop in your
school or with a group of non-formal educators. Please

WOW-Wonders of Wetlands
PROJECT
LEARNING TREE (PLT) is
an award-winning environmental education program designed
for teachers and other educators, parents, and community
leaders working with youth from Grades
preK–12. The
program uses trees and the forest as a "window" to
the natural world ecology, and habitat. In other words,
it helps students learn about the environment and their
place in it. The lessons focus on the scientific process,
critical and creative thinking, as well as direct and
hands-on experience; they are interdisciplinary and student
centered.
Flying
WILD-This
exciting new program of the Council for Environmental Education
introduces middle-school students to bird conservation
through classroom activities and school bird festivals.
It also support educator by providing interdisciplinary,
standards-based opportunities to engage students in real-world
learning that helps them understand the importance of migratory
birds and their conservation.
