Graduate Admissions and Assistantships

Admission to the graduate program in sociology requires that the following items be sent to the Graduate College:

  1. Application for Admission
  2. Transcript(s) of grades
  3. GRE scores

Western uses a GAP score, which is obtained by multiplying GPA times your combined verbal and quantitative scores for a minimum product of 2200.  A minimum score of 3.5 on the analytical section is also required.

Each year the Department awards a limited number of graduate assistantships on a competitive basis. Both teaching assistantships and minority assistantships are available for qualified applicants. Teaching assistantships include a stipend to help offset living costs and a partial waiver of out-of-state tuition.  Minority assistantships include a stipend plus a full tuition waiver. For assistantship consideration applicants must meet the Graduate Studies GAP score requirement (GAP of 2700 for Fall 2003 and a minimum of 3.5 on the analytical section of the GRE). In addition, preference is given to students who have completed eighteen undergraduate hours in sociology - including theory, methods, and statistics - with an average of "B" or better. Applicants also should submit directly to the department a two-page statement of purpose outlining the reasons for pursuing the MA in sociology and three letters of recommendation. The application for admission to graduate school and the application for graduate assistantships are available from the WKU Office of Graduate Studies.
