Damayanti defines herself primarily as an environmental sociologist though her interests range from gender inequality to social movements, culture, and political sociology. Her recent research includes a study of a cultural politics of place and placelessness in a displaced community in Between the Rivers Kentucky. She is also working on other projects including environmental justice movements in the shipbreaking industry in India, outsourcing and the sexual politics of globalization, and cultural identities of diasporic communities in India and US. Damayanti’s papers have been published in leading sociological journals and she is currently working on multiple papers for publications in journals and books. She is happy to meet and work with graduate students with research interests in rural/environmental sociology, cultural sociology, political sociology, social movements and globalization.
