Broadcasting Major (726) Rev. 5/08

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS:
Students entering the University or declaring the major in fall 2008

Prospective majors may take no more than 18 hours in the major before admission. Students must meet the following requirements before they can be admitted:

1. Completion of 30 hours of course work applicable to the baccalaureate degree with a minimum overall grade point average of 2.7. Required courses include COMM 145 or COMM 161 (preferably COMM 161), HIST 119 or 120, the university math requirement, and at least a “C” in ENG 100.

2. Completion of the following courses with at least a “C,” according to the intended sequence:

Broadcast News : BCOM 185, and either 201,or 266
Radio/TV Operations : BCOM 185, and either 201, or 261
TV/Film Production: BCOM 185, and either 201, or 266,

CURRICULUM (effective fall 2008)

For students entering the Univresity or declaring the major in fall 2008, the major in Broadcasting requires a minimum of 39 semester hours and leads to a Bachelor of Arts Degree. Each broadcasting major must have a concentration of study (minor or second major) outside journalism/mass communication/communication studies. Generally, students may select any other minor as long as it is approved by the broadcast major advisor, 80 hours are taken outside the major and at least 65 hours of traditional liberal arts and science courses are completed.

Students entering the major in broadcasting may choose from three concentrations for their study emphasis as listed below. No grade below a C will be accepted toward the completion of the major. One-half of the hours earned in the major must be at the 300/400 level. Pre-requisites are listed in parentheses. Only 3 hours of internship or co-op may be counted within the major. One hour workshops may be repeated in different topics up to 4hrs, however only 3workshop semester hours will count within the 39 hour major.

    Restricted electives (6 hours) Chosen in consultation with departmental advisor. Some suggested electives include: BCOM 261, 328, 329, 360, 361, 385, 429, 461 (1hr), 467 (1hr), 491, COMM 247, JOUR 495.
