Program Rationale

Although Asia is one of the major world regions, it is one of the least familiar to North Americans. Yet this region, with its concentration of the world's population, has influenced us in complex and often profound ways. As a pivotal region in current world affairs, Asia directly affects our political, social, religious, and economic well-being. Learning how to grapple with global issues from other cultural perspectives is a first step toward international peace and understanding.

The Asian Studies Minor attempts to provide an international, cross-cultural emphasis for the undergraduate student. Its aim is to focus on a cultural-geographical area and afford the student a multidisciplinary approach to understanding the life styles of the people who inhabit the area. It draws upon the talents of professors within the university, and uses courses offered within various departments and colleges.
