In addition to the University's General Education Requirements, students may choose from the following courses of study:
The Literature Option (reference number 662) includes courses in English Language, surveys in British, American, and World Literature, Advanced Composition, and four intensive courses in specialized literary subjects. This course is offered in fall term only.
The Writing Option (reference number 662) includes courses in English Language, surveys in British, American, and World Literature, and five specialized writing classes, including an advanced writing workshop. This course is offered in spring term only.
The English and Allied Language Arts Option (reference number 547) which incorporates a major and minor, is available to all students, but it is the only program leading to secondary certification in Language Arts.* It includes courses in English Language, Surveys of British, American, and World Literature, Advanced Composition, two intensive courses in specialized literary subjects, six specific courses from the Departments of Communication, Journalism, and/or Theater.
*Students in the teacher certification program must take six specific Language Arts courses, as well as English 410 and Literacy 444. An endorsement in Teaching English as a Second Language can also be obtained with twelve additional hours of coursework in English.
The English Minor (reference number 359) includes courses in English Language, surveys of British and American Literature, one intensive course in a specialized literary subject, and one advanced writing elective.
The Writing Minor (reference number 496), not designed for teacher certification, includes courses in English Language, two intensive courses in specialized literary subjects, and four advanced Writing electives.
