Certificate in Political Communication
This certificate allows for exploration of the role that communication plays in political systems by combining studies in the fields of communication and government / political science. The Certificate is designed for students seeking preparation for careers as legislative aides, political consultants, campaign managers, speech writers, or lobbyists. Students who complete the certificate will have a solid foundation of communication skills and theory with a working knowledge of the political system.
Housed in the Department of Communication and Department of Political Science, students are required to take:
- COMM/GOVT 488, Senior Seminar in Political Communication
- GOVT 375, Fundamentals of Political Campaign Management
- Two (2) courses from the following list of Communication Studies courses:
- COMM 245 Argumentation & Debate
- COMM 343 Speech Analysis / Speech Writing
- COMM 345 Advanced Public Speaking
- COMM 346 Persuasion
- COMM 349 Group Decision Making
- COMM 443 Persuasion in Contemporary Society
- One (1) course from the following list of government courses:
- GOVT 310 The American Presidency
- GOVT 316 The Legislative Process
- GOVT 371 Public Opinion & Electoral Behavior
- GOVT 372 Politics & the Mass Media
- GOVT 373 Minority Politics
- GOVT 374 Women and Politics
- GOVT 435 American Political Thought
The certificate requires a minimum of 15 hours.
