Applying for a Graduate Assistantship
Graduate Assistantships are available in the Communication Department and the WKU Forensics Program. When you apply for admission, you may also apply for an assistantship.
Minimum Requirements for Graduate Assistantships:
GAP Score (verbal plus quantitative times the undergrad GRE) must equal ......2700 Analytical Writing score must be 3.5 or better.
Here is the procedure to follow:
Apply for admission to the program.
Write a letter indicating that you are applying for a graduate assistantship.
Ask three references to send a letter of recommendation to the Graduate Studies Office. NOTE: The Grad. Studies Office does not notify the departments of your intent to join the program, or for an assistantship, until all materials are received.

Types of Graduate Assistantships:
Research/Service: Requires 20 hours per week in research assignments for faculty.
Teaching: After earning 18 hours of graduate credit and completing 6 Center for Teaching & Learning Workshops as required by the Graduate Studies Office, you will be eligible for a teaching assignment which would involve teaching one or two sections of basic speech classes.
Forensic Assistantship: Assist with coaching and chaperoning the forensics team to tournaments.
All Graduate Assistants also judge rounds at the on-campus forensics tournaments held once each semester. In addition, all Graduate Assistants are called on to work with faculty and staff on department related projects.
A Graduate Assistantship is different from a scholarship in that there are work responsibiliites required and taxes are deducted from the bi-weekly paycheck.
