Kim Chalmers, Department Head
Increased Student Learning.
Individual courses are assessed for effectiveness and targeted for development by ongoing public presentations within the department each semester. Overall program review is based on Assessment results from Sophomore and Senior portfolios. This year’s significant increase in exhibition and professional art activity demonstrates increased awareness of professional standards and expectations. The energy, drive and commitment of our students as engaged, activists and effective visual communicators is encouraged and motivated by a committed faculty. Among the activities here note the community participation as well as growing international experience.
Student engagement activity is fully integrated across the art program. In class and out, in a variety of discipline related organizations, (Art Guild, Print Club, Ceramics Club, Graphic Design Group) student active involvement and independent learning experiences are diverse, lively and expanding. Students participated in over 36 arts-related lectures or performances on and off campus.

Selected Alumni Reports
The following selected examples demonstrate graduate successes in a broad array of activities from solid graduate experience to significant professional accomplishment. Many have started businesses independently (Powerhouse Factories and the Jim Amann Gallery) others have placed themselves in prestigious centers (National Freedom Center, Hatch Show Print) as outlined below. Still others are exhibiting their creative work broadly achieving recognition for their creative work (Guggenheim Fellowship). A steady stream of correspondence from alumni testify to energetic commitment and ongoing personal and professional growth coupled with an appreciation and loyalty to their experience at WKU. These are the results of extended and ongoing strategic planning which has as it’s central focus the development of its students as innovative, resourceful, and contributors who are independent thinkers bound by an intentionally charged sense of community.

Enrollment Growth
We continue to see substantial increased enrollments and graduation rates across the program. Increased expectations, standards of performance and a renewed emphasis on quality and broadened involvement support student development and point to positive long term program evolution. Outreach refinements establish WKU’s Art program and institutional identity to a broad constituency through lively and dramatic web presentations.
Technology Enhancements and improved availability encourage increased utilization of digital presentations by both faculty and students. Many classes, studio and history alike enrich their research and presentations with accessible documentation and visual resources drawn from a diversity of sources. We are currently redeveloping our visual resource facility and digital photographic capacity and resources in response to growing interest and anticipated need.
