TEACHING PHILOSOPHY

My pedagogy is founded on the belief that art training and experience enrich our lives and ultimately help to improve society. Therefore I embrace my responsibilities as an artist and teacher, by continually seeking to make accessible artistic-educational experiences for the community.

As a foundations instructor I have three primary objectives. First, elevate student-visual awareness. Coupled with guidance, close observation of the natural world helps students recognize, question, and classify reoccurring visual-perceptual phenomena. Second, teach students the mechanical tools needed to communicate effectively within various visual media and aid them in the development of technical processes. Finally, and most important to me, increase the students’ sense of connectivity. Beauty, when referring to art, is not solely the result of sensual stimulation. Oftentimes the artwork’s exquisiteness is tied to the more cerebral relationships found between its elements. This is what the noted art psychologist Rudolph Arnheim referred to as “the connecting tissue of in-between areas” (Arnheim, 155). My students are encouraged to seek out these relationships which lean inward towards the psychological and expand outward into sociological, historical, and cultural contexts.
