Beginning classes offer experience in traditional sculpture production methods including modeling, carving and casting projects, as well as an introduction to less-traditional materials. Intermediate studies broaden this survey of techniques and ideas to include welding, metal casting, site and installation art. Advanced studies encourage refinement of student’s interests and technical skills for the production of an intelligent, visually engaging body of work. The department has more than twenty five hundred square feet of indoor space dedicated to sculpture. The studio has extensive facilities in woodworking that include band saws, a table saw, a combination belt and disc sanding station, a power miter saw, a complete dust collection system, and a broad array of hand tools. The welding facilities include two oxy/acetylene stations, two arc welders and a TIG welder, a plasma cutter, various sheet metal shears and bending devices. There is a sizable space dedicated to bronze and aluminum casting, with a recently installed ceramic shell molding system and an outdoor burnout kiln. A partially enclosed outdoor court allows for large-scale works or environmental projects. |
