Frequently Asked Questions

Q. How much choice do I have in what courses I take?
A. As indicated earlier, you are required to take COMM 503, COMM 502 and either COMM 501 or 504. In addition you must take 24 hours of coursework including any independent study or thesis. You should work with your Advisor to work out a program that fits your career path needs. Read the catalog course descriptions and identify the courses that you think would fit your goals before you fill out the Form C with your advisor.

Q. May I take courses outside the Department of Communication.
A. Yes, with prior approval of the Graduate Director and your Advisor. You may take up to 6 hours outside the department. This includes courses you may transfer in from another university.

Q. What happens if I turn in the Form C and later need to make changes to my program.
A. Ask for a Course Change Form in the departmental office. Consult with your Advisor who will sign off on your changes. Take it to the Grad. Studies Office.

Q. Do I have to write a thesis?
A. NO

Q. If I do complete a thesis, how much course credit do I get?
A. Don't wait until the last semester to decide to write a thesis. Discuss it and plan with your Advisor as soon as possible in your studies. You may get 6 hours credit for a thesis which means you will need to complete 9 regular 3 hour courses and earn the remaining 2 three hour courses from writing a thesis (see guidelines)

Q. If I took one of Western’s undergraduate courses such as COMM461, may I take the graduate equivalent COMM461G
A. NO

Q. What is the timetable of weekend classes?
A. We offer weekend classes six times a year (1st & 2nd fall bi-term and 1st & 2nd spring bi-term, 1st and 2nd summer session (1 month each). A weekend class usually meets on 4 alternating weekends starting on a Saturday and Friday/Saturday the other 3 weekends. Specific times and dates are announced by the department.
