PRIME SITES
The CareerMeister's "Top 12" Career and Job Search Sites (alphabetical order)
- America's Job Bank Probably the largest single source for job postings on the web. This site boldly claims to have over 100,000 job openings at any given time. The variety of positions is excellent. You'll find much more than the typical technical stuff here. The procedure, (looking up job codes), for using their search engine is cumbersome, and the information is presented in a formal and somewhat stuffy manner, but what do you really expect from a site sponsored by the U.S. Department of Labor? All of the information you find at this site is free to public. If you're looking for postings, this is a grand place to begin.
CareerMeister Rating: 9.7/functionality 7.8/artistic impression
- Business Job Finder
Currently the absolute best website for direct information about specific business career opportunities and hiring organizations. A must-see for Emory's BBA's. Extremely comprehensive and very well laid out. (Excellence in Finance, Accounting and Management/Consulting career information.) This site is updated frequently. The webmaster at Ohio State is definitely on the cutting edge of timely and accurate information.
CareerMeister Rating: 10/functionality 8.9/artistic impression
- Career Mosaic A cornucopia of career information and links. Very large site, in fact some might say it's downright "humungus." Has an excellent search mechanism for current job openings. Can search via keyword, state, etc... College students rate it highly, might be overwhelming to some "career newbies."
CareerMeister Rating: 9.9/functionality 9.2/artistic impression
- Good Works An incredible site if you are looking for information related to finding work in the area of social change. You will find over 1000 national organizations profiled by type of service, number of professional staff, typical number of position openings per year, salary ranges as well as internship and volunteer opportunities. Without question the best site of its type currently available on the web. Self-described as "The pay is modest...The work is important...The satisfaction is INCREDIBLE!" Combine the high-quality information with a pleasing design and you have an absolutely tremendous site.
CareerMeister Rating: 9.9/functionality 9.7/artistic impression
- Hoover's Company Search A handy little research site provding an excellent search engine for finding information about public and private companies. If you want the Hoover's profiles you'll have to pay for them. (Bummer! Isn't the web supposed to be free??) Don't bother paying. You'll get plenty of research information using the Masterlist Plus Database here. (It's free!) Search by company name or press the Masterlist link to search by industry, earnings, or geographic area.
CareerMeister Rating: 8.9/functionality 5.9/artistic impression
- JobHunt Provides many
useful links to job search sites with position openings in multiple specialty areas. The scope of links is both comprehensive and impressive!! Would probably take months to digest all of the information contained in the links of this site. If you're looking for a site with well-organized useful links to career related webpages, this is one of the best!
CareerMeister Rating: 10/functionality 5.7/artistic impression
- Jobtrak This is the official site of Emory University Career Center job postings. Emory students/faculty/staff can access daily job postings by selecting the Emory option and pathway option. It is also an excellent site for providing links to homepages of organizations who regularly hire college educated professionals. Anyone can use this site, only those with Emory affiliations can access the Emory job postings. Alumni can call (404) 727-6211 for password access.
CareerMeister Rating: 9.9/functionality
8.4/artistic impression
- Monster Board This site is the absolute fave of many college career seekers. It contains an outstanding search engine and resume posting area. Originally launched to focus on career positions and opportunities in the Northeastern United States, it has since diversified. Its roots are still in the N.E. for those of you yearning for some special attention to this geographic area, but it has branched out beyond this focus as well. If you really like this site you can even order your own Monster Board T-shirt! Recently revised with even better/faster loading graphics.
CareerMeister Rating: 9.8/functionality 9.8/artistic impression
- NCS Career Magazine This site has really come on strong recently. It is quickly developing into one of the premiere "massive career search services" on the web. Extremely comprehensive and easy to navigate. Has great articles, a large number of job postings, (although most still have a heavy technical focus), and a free resume bank. If you can overlook the rather sickly color of the blue & green image map this might be a great place to start your career search; especially if you are looking for technical positions.
CareerMeister Rating: 9.8/functionality 8.8/artistic impression
- Online Career Center One of the first and one of the best of the comprehensive career search sites. Possibly even more humungus than Career Mosaic. Surfers could get lost in here, but it is a great place to be lost. Has many position openings and lots of articles and information on conducting a career search. Can download your resume here. Tends to be heavy with technical positions, but seems to be diversifying with time.
CareerMeister Rating: 9.8/functionality 8.8/artistic impression
- Student Center Who says the career search can't be fun? Student Center is one of the more innovative career sites on the web. Be sure to check out the virtual interview feature. Most surfers won't want to miss the "Fortune-tellin'/Career-pickin'" section either. This site is new and much is still being constructed. The career search sections are based on decent published works, but don't yet live up to the creativity of the rest of this site. This site shows tremendous promise for future development.
CareerMeister Rating: 9.6/functionality 8.9/artistic impression
- T.V. Jobs: Broadcast Employment ServicesHey all you Ted Koppel and Katie Couric wannabees! Here's a site featuring a very comprehensive employment bulletin board for most U.S. network television stations and affiliates. T.V. Excellent reference site for researching television markets and stations. A definite MUST for those seeking broadcasting careers, (technical and talent).
CareerMeister Rating: 9.6/functionality 8.8/artistic impression
CAREER & JOB SEARCH WEBSITES
- Academe This Week: Chronicle of Higher Education Job Listings These positions are an electronic version of the Chronicle's weekly classifieds. You will mostly find positions in higher education ranging from admissions/financial aid/student services to faculty/teaching to provost/president. Easy to use search engines. Probably the best site to locate positions in higher education.
CareerMeister Rating: 9.9/functionality 7.2/artistic impression
- Bay Area Jobs
This one's for all you left coast fans. If you are bold enough to ignore the whole Richter thing and dream of living and working in the Bay area, this site will literally meet all of your needs. Allan the webmaster is a wee-bit obsessed with finding Bay area employment links. His crazy, compulsive, link-searching, lunacy has led to the very best listing of local job links for any metro area on the internet. It is for the betterment of all men & women looking for work in the Bay area. Scope it out before "The Big One" hits.
CareerMeister Rating: 9.6/functionality 8.9/artisitc impression
- Best Bets From the Net
Yet another in a long line of career link sites. This one tends to be well-organized, but does focus mostly on academic related and science types of career links.
CareerMeister Rating: 8.0/functionality 4.6/artisitc impression
- Boston Job Bank So Beantown is where you want to work, eh? This is one of the best websites currently available to find Boston-area job postings. The graphics are appealing and the information is like the Red Sox bullpen...very adequate, but not quite stellar.
CareerMeister Rating: 7.7/functionality 8.6/artistic impression
- Career Center Homepages
As advertised this page provides links to Career Centers who have web presentations on-line. Some of them are quite good, others are rather bland at best. Most web surfers find them less than spectacular from a design standpoint, but who cares? It's the content that is crucial, right? The information can be useful if you are looking into jobs in specific regions of the country. Might be worth visiting some of these sites to judge for yourself how useful they can be.
CareerMeister Rating: 8.3/functionality 7.4/artistic impression
- CareerPath.com This site allows users to view & search the current classified job listings from the following major newspapers: BOSTON GLOBE, CHICAGO TRIBUNE, L.A. TIMES, N.Y. TIMES, SANJOSE MERCURY NEWS and THE WASHINGTON POST. While this information is really cool to receive on-line, jobseekers must remember these are classified ads. Not traditionally the most effective way to find job openings. Also not specifically targeted toward entry-level job seekers. This site requires user to register at no charge! Minimal hassel.
CareerMeister Rating: 9.2/functionality 9.0/artistic impression
- Catapult: Links of frequently visited career pages The "Mother" of all link pages. Propels you to many useful sites, but descriptions are a little sketchy.
CareerMeister Rating: 8.6/functionality 7.6/artistic impression
- College Graduate Job Hunter Quantum Leap Publishing is "oh so sneaky." This cleverly disguised book promotion is packed with information which college students/recent graduates will find useful. It actually contains excerpts from the book "The College Graduate Job Hunter." The excerpts are written in "X'ish" style and are pretty useful and interesting. The site features links and information specifically targeted to attract recent college graduates. The site has been updated recently and now also incorporates sound bytes.
CareerMeister Rating: 9.1/functionality 8.5/artistic impression

CareerMeister Rating: 9.2/functionality 6.5/artistic impression
- ESpan This award-winning website tends to be over-hyped. Artistically it is very appealing, and functionality is impossible to rate fairly. The biggest drawback is it requires you to go through a lengthy registration process to fully utilize their services. Registration is a hassel. Three different visits ended with server being too busy to accept application materials after several minutes to prepare. ESpan does little more than frustrate the CareerMeister. Perhaps you'll have better luck.
CareerMeister Rating: 4.4/functionality 9.7/artistic impression
- Fedworld Looking for "goo-gobs" of government job listings? This is most definitely the site for you! Select the Office of Personnel Management Link option for MASSIVE, and we mean, MASSIVE listings of Government Jobs broken down by states and regions. Updated daily. Sounds great, huh? The only problem is it is an FTP site meaning it's not nearly as easy or interesting to navigate as http websites. Pretty boring layouts of text documents. The info. is world-class, the presentation is dull at best. BE CERTAIN TO LOOK AT THE TXT FILES. OTHERS MAY PRESENT CHALLENGES/ PROBLEMS IN OPENING. Other links from this page like PEACE CORPS, are quite advanced considering they are government sites.
CareerMeister Rating: 8.2/functionality 1.2/artistic impression

Gives you a company profile/overview and then tells you about current position openings. Things can't get any simpler than this. The current downfalls of this site are the heavy focus on the midwest and the incomplete pages. Site is being developed, has the potential to be great.
CareerMeister Rating: 8.1/functionality 4.0/artistic impression

- Graduate School Rankings: U.S. News & World Report While career development professionals shy away from rankings, we know students love 'em. Please use them responsibly. The new 1996 Rankings are here!
CareerMeister Rating: 8.2/functionality 8.3/artistic impression
- GRE Online Wow! This is one of the best designed sites we've reviewed in a while. Eye-popping graphics. If you're using Netscape 2.0 the tables are great! Better start thinking about CBT b/c October 1996 figures to be the last time you'll find a paper and pencil test offered for fall.
CareerMeister Rating: 9.2/funtionality 9.7/artistic impression
- Law School Admissions Council Like many law-school oriented sites on the net, this site is peddling some wares. If you can get past this fact, you'll find some useful information. Add to this the opportunity to find Law School Forum dates, register electronically for the LSAT, and even receive some "free" information, (apparently they are embarassed to charge for everything!), and you have a pretty nice little site.
CareerMeister Rating: 8.8/functionality 7.8/artistic impression
