For over 25 years a workshop/course has been offered at Land Between the Lake jointly by Western Kentucky University and Marray State University. During June 14-20, 2008, WKU and MSU will be offering a very special opportunity. For a variety of reasons, including our source of funding for this event, this year's experience will be an ADVANCED training, and will only be open to individuals who have taken the LBL course previously. In addition, because of a special arrangement with our funder, the Kentucky Council on Postsecondary Education (CPE), priority will be given to individuals who attended the 2007 workshop, and then the remaining slots can be filled by people who attended in previous years.

As in the past, the workshop will be headquartered at Brandon spring Group Camp and will utilize much of the 170,000 acres at LBL as an outdoor learning laboratory. daytime and evening activities will focus on increasing teachers' understanding of both the natural and cultural world, with an emphasis on how to translate that knowledge and appreciation to preK-12 students. This experience is appropriate for eductors of all subject areas. It will emphaziae instructional strategies appropriate for all facets of the school curriculum, including science, social studies, math, languages arts, fine arts, health, physical education, business education, and family consumer science.

The grant acquired from the CPE wil support participants in this program. The grant will cover eligible participants' room and board expenses. In addition, participants will receive a total of $440 in stipends for completing the project requirements. Also, approximately $300 worth of materials will be provided to each participant for participating in the program. Graduate credit is available for this program from WKU under ENVE 580 or ENVE 585, depending on the needs of your program. Permission of the instructor is required for admittance to either of these courses AND individuals who take the experience for this graduate credit are eligible to apply for a scholarship up to $500 to help defray the tuition.

Those interested in participating in this institute must complete an application form, click here for an application form, or click here to apply on-line. Twenty educators from each of the two university regions will be selected for this advanced experience. To be considered, one must apply for admission by April 1, 2008. You will be notified by April 10, 2008, as to your acceptance in the program. You must complete the appication form, and if accepted, you will need to send us a deposit of $75 (made out to WKU). Those who are accepted will get that check back upon arrival at LBL on June 14th.

Teachers of upper elementary through high school and citizens in western Kentucky will become actively involved in learning about the quality of water in their watersheds. You will have hands-on, direct experiences to learn about the impact of nonpoint source pollution on the quality of water in your streams.

Designed for teachers of all disciplines, the activities will lead to the understanding of your place in the watershed and determining the health of your streams by checking the physical characteristics and biological indicators, and by conducting a chemical analysis.

You will receive Project Wet and Project Wild Curriculum and Activity Guides. Instructional materials and all the supplies and equipment needed to do the activities with students, can be obtained from the Center for Math, Science and Environmental Education in the Jones-Jagger Hall, Room 131.
