The majority of my classes begin with a ten minute free
writing period. Most days I have a topic on the board to direct student
writing. Two or three class periods before starting the actual Childhood
Memory Story assignment, I choose freewriting topics designed to start
students thinking about their childhood. Some topics I have used as
a prelude to this assignment are included below:
- What is your first memory as a child? Walking?
Hitting your older brother with a bat? A car ride?
- What is the most embarrassing thing that happened to
you in first grade?
- What is the best gift you ever received?
- Who were your best friends in second grade? Are
they your friends now?
- Did you ever get lost in your own neighborhood?
Did you spend time outside? Think of something that happened to you
outside and write about the experience.
