Example 6

Tigers on the Prowl
By: Ben M.

"Okay, boys we are playing some tough teams today."  We are in a basketball tournament, at the Ohio County Middle School.  We're not special; I mean everyone is in it.  We are the Western Elementary Tigers.  We are playing all the teams from the county, elementary schools anyway.
"We need to play unselfish ball and pass to the open man," my basketball coach, Jeff, explained.  His is giving us a pep talk before our basketball game and telling us what to do to win.
    "Most of all...have fun."
Then we huddled up and cried out, "All together is better!!"  I was nervous, not that we were playing Fordsville, but the game afterwards.  We began to play.  It wasn't long until the game was over.  ERRRR!  The buzzer went off and we won.
"Alright," I joyfully said to myself.
"Way to go guys," Jeff congratulated us.
"Jeff, Jeff who do we play next?"" I asked.
"Uh, Beaver Dam I think.  Everyone be back at twelve-thirty." My teammates and I went and ate somewhere and rested for our next game.
Before long it was time to kick some Beaver Dam Beaver Butt!  So we took the floor, shoot lay-ups, and did warm-ups.
The referee blew the whistle and threw the ball up and we got the tip.  We took the ball down the court and scored two points.  Cha-ching!  We're on the scoreboard.  It wasn't long until Beaver Dam scored.  We called a play and scored tow points.  We kept on scoring until we were ahead by at least ten points.
My heart was racing, my breathe was trying to catch up with it.  Everyone was drowning in sweat as we raced up the court.  I glanced at the scoreboard and there was five seconds left in the game.  We just slowed down a little as the buzzer sounded.
"Yeah we won!" everyone exclaimed chaotically.
"Who's next?" I thought.  "Jeff, who do we play next?"
"We play the winner of this next game," he replied.
"Who plays,"  I started to ask. but I saw Wayland and Southern running out on the floor.  It was not a close game by far.  Wayland won. In the regular season Wayland beat us, so it was payback time.
Ryan, my teammate, was jumping against Bradley.  For those who don't know who Bradley is, he is a tree!  Bradley is six foot tall.  Of course, he go the tip.
They shot the ball, scored, and took the lead.  Then we scored a basket and we were ahead, and they score, take the lead back.   It kept on going like that back and forth.  The next quarter they pulled ahead a little.  Toward the end of the quarter, my teammate, Chantz, shot the ball and it bounced off the rim.  There was about two seconds left in the first half.  I leaped up and grabbed the ball in mid-air and ERRR! I landed on the floor.  Looking up, I saw the ball as it bounced around the rim.  Eventually it fell in Everyone went crazy; everyone except Wayland, that is.  I was so excited I grabbed the wrong Gatorade bottle!  All my teammates were congratulating me.
We came out in the second half behind, but worked our way back to the top.  In the second half Wayland knocked the ball under our goal.  I glanced at jeff who was holding up four fingers.
I yelled our, "four!" Everyone breaks to their position.  I pass the ball in and then dash to the other side of the court.  Perry, my teammate, passed me the ball.  I shoot and swoosh!  I scored, we're coming back.
In the last quarter, we tired them out, as we ran up and down the court; fast breaking and scoring.  I feel a relief as time is running out because we have a ten point lead.  Wayland passed the ball in then throw the ball in the air and miss.
    "Yeah!" the crowd went wild!
"We won! We won!" Everyone celebrates.
We shook their hands.  Then the middle school coaches congratulated us and gave us our trophy.  It was a great honor, winning the First Annual Sixth Grade Boys Preseason Basketball Tournament!
