Purpose: To scienctifically explain what makes a roller coaster so much fun.
Audience: Kid's Discovery, a science magazine geared towards middle school aged students.
Outline of the Feature Article:
1. Name your article, make it something exciting.
Look at copies of Kid's Discovery Magazine to get ideas.
2. Type: Submitted for publication in Kid's Discovery Magazine.
Paragraph One- Introductory Lead. You need to captivate the reader. One good way to do this is to take the reader on a fast-paced ride with you. Another would be a series of questions about why roller coasters are so much fun. Or you could ask and then answer why roller coasters are so terrifying or exciting. Any of these would be appropriate ways to begin your article.
Paragraph Two- Tell your reader a little about the man
that made all of this wonderfully terrifying fun possible, Sir Isaac Newton.
Then you need to write a sentence asking them to look at the bottom of
the page at your 2-D scale model of the roller coaster that you created.
Description of your 2-D scale model. Insert a graph
template to draw your roller coaster on inside your piece(see Student Work
for an example). You will label the sections as A, B, C, and D.
Paragraph Three- Take audience on a ride through section A, as if they are actually beside you. What emotions would they experience and why? What would their bodies experience? What is the science behind all of the things that are happening to them?
Paragraph Four- Take audience on a ride through section B, as if they are actually beside you. What emotions would they experience and why? What would their bodies experience? What is the science behind all of the things that are happening to them?
Paragraph Five- Take audience on a ride through section C, as if they are actually beside you. What emotions would they experience and why? What would their bodies experience? What is the science behind all of the things that are happening to them?
Paragraph Six- Take audience on a ride through section D, as if they are actually beside you. What emotions would they experience and why? What would their bodies experience? What is the science behind all of the things that are happening to them?
Paragraph Seven- Conclusion. This paragraph should wrap the article up for the reader. It should leave the reader either wondering when they are going to be able to hit the coasters next, or terrified that they will have to. You should tie up any loose ends from your introduction paragraph.
