Editorials are a great way for students to defend a position on a controversial issue. Editorials are also a good way to work through the writing process with the students. This process will include pre writing, drafting, peer editing, revising, and finalizing the piece.
This assignment has proven to be a fun alternative (see Lesson Plan). Don't tell the students this is a writing assignment. When the editorial survey is distributed, many students think it is a test. Reassure them that it is not a test and tell them they are on a break from the normal classroom activities. After students complete the survey, allow them to share their opinions with the class. Many of the students are very eager to share their opinion with anyone who will listen. This activity allows them to share their opinions and feelings. A word of caution; remind the students to choose their words carefully so no one will be offended. Afterwards, begin the editorial writing process.
Since the assignment is designed to be a step-by-step process over four or five days, the students should have ample time needed to produce a quality piece of writing. Encourage the students to have a quality final piece that would be worthy of being published in the school newspaper or local newspaper.
"Thank you" to Sharon Hatton and Elizabeth Dick with the Kentucky Writing Program for sharing their materials and ideas. Also, "thanks" to the students who have allowed their work to be published on this site.
