Revision and Strategies
Open-Responses
Overview
Revision takes place after the instructor has scored
the response, the class has discussed the different answers while critiquing
examples, and the instructor has demonstrated to the class how to effectively
answer the question in order to receive a score of an 4(distinguished).
This example may have been completed during the exam review, and if so,
the instructor could simply review the response with the students before
issuing the assignment of re-doing their open-response answer. This will
provide them with a means of gaining writing practice, reviewing
important information, and improving their grade.
Revision Activity
In order to effectively teach the students how to answer
these types of questions, I model a correct response for the class during
review and the revision stage. This is done by (1) placing a copy
of the 3-column method chart on the overhead and reviewing the meaning
of each column, (2) completing each column using the students as an aide
to answering the given question, (3) discussing alternative ways to creatively
answer the question so that the reader will want to read on, (4) and at
the end of the activity number the different sentences to show where they
would "fit in" the answer (I would not write the answer for fear that a
student would have the ability to remember and copy word for word).
