The Assignment
Overview
Grade Level: 7th
Class: Social Studies/Ancient Civilizations
My Social Studies class includes a variety of learning
styles, activities, and assessments. Students study civilizations
such as Early Settlers, Egypt, Greece, and Rome. Most learning occurs
through class discussion, hands-on learning, and/or modeling proper procedures
for certain assessments. One type of assessment that is used throughout
the course of the year is Open-Response.
Why write answers to Open-Response questions?
-
It provides students with the opportunity for writing and
demonstrating their thoughts.
-
It provides the instructor with feedback of students' understanding
of materials.
As part of the students study of Greece, my students were
required to complete one of two open-response questions at the conclusion
of their study. In order to prepare the students for the question/assignment,
the instructor must go over the question(s) during the review, remind student's
of the proper writing format (3-column method) and scoring guide.
It is also recommended that the instructor might give examples of what
it would take for a student to receive a 4 on their answer.
