Sample #1

The Cherokee

The Cherokee were a people of peace,
Who caused us no harm.
But somehow treaties came to cease,
And they were forced off their farm.

We called them uncivilized,
And locked them in stockades.
They were tantalized,
These people began to fade.

From there they were marched,
On a "Trail of Tears."
By the sun they were parched,
Children tried to conquer their fears.

The new territory was hard,
Mothers, fathers, and children cried.
Their life seemed to be marred,
And many Cherokee died.

What was done was wrong,
However it was too late to change.
The Cherokee nation had been strong,
Yet we made them estranged.

But amazingly they survived,
And made a new way.
The Cherokee began to thrive,
And are still here today!

Sample #2

Tears on a Trailside

The Cherokee nation lived in peace
They hunted plenty of game on which to feast
Their mountains were abundant with gold
Or so the white men was told

The white men had no honor
He stole from the land of these civilized farmers
They lied and cheated the values out of the Cherokee lives
So the Cherokee took arms with their guns and knives

The US government fixed the situation
And Andy Jackson made a proclamation
The Cherokee were thrown into stockades
They lived in mud and could not bathe

In the fall they were marched West
The government thought it best
But one-fourth of those brave Cherokees died
On that trail soaked with tears that they cried
