Revising and Editing
I usually take one day to present the assignment, one or
two days for the students to research and/or write the first draft. I then
use either all of one class period to edit and revise or portions of a
few classes to work on articles. I conference with any student who asks
me to read over their writing. I also require them to do some peer editing.
Publishing
If time allows, have students type their articles. They may
add pictures or original artwork to their pieces. It's much easier if you
bookmark sites for pictures or save pictures in a file for the students
to use. Otherwise the students will use all their time trying to find graphics
to use with their article. If the intention is to put together a newspaper,
then I have them type in column format.
We have put our articles together into a classroom newspaper,
or magazine, we've displayed them on the board or in hallway under a banner
that reads, "What's In The News" or "This Week in History". Students have
also done presentations, where they read their articles as news stories.
