Day One
Procedures
-
Choose any short story from a current
anthology.

Read it orally or silently, round
robin style or dictatorial teacher style.

Discuss it.
-
Have students answer any textbook
questions and perform any activities in the textbook for greater understanding
of the story.

Discuss answers

Journal: Have students
use the same anthology to find models of plays for punctuation, capitalization
and spacing style.
-
Use textbook model to write a play
script based on three or more pages of text.
-
Divide into random groups of five.
-
Have groups select a presenter and
a recorder.
-
Each group member will take turns
reading his or her script to the others
-
The group as a whole will select
the best script to present to the large group (Only five presenters will
emerge in the end.)

Teacher will circulate around the
room carefully listening to scripts as they are being read.

Back to large group
-
Five chosen presenters will read
their scripts as others provide a note-taking audience.
-
Recorder will accompany presenter
to podium to discuss how group came to decision on the one script. (Reflection
and verbalization)
The whole class will then
vote on one script.
Day Two
-
Copies of the chosen script will
be handed out to all class members
-
Class will vote on a director, a
producer, and a casting director who have presented their capabilities
to the class in the form of a political speaker.

Director, producer, and videographer,
casting director, and author of chosen script will cast the play from students
who have indicated on the board which character they are interested in
playing.

Cast will be posted

Homework: Actors should be
instructed to have their lines memorized by Day Three. They are usually
motivated and excited enough to achieve this task. Also, actors should
bring from home a permission slip which grants authority for make up.

Homework: Videographer and
Scenery committees should phone tree to plan

action for the next day

Homework: Costume Committee members
should phone tree, also.
