Law Day Essay Sample Three
Student Model

Equal Justice
by Brittany Turner 9th grade student 2002

Assuring Equal Justice for All.  This sentence embodies the very soul of America, a nation built by those who came here to obtain a vision of equality, a nation whose past exemplifies the ongoing fight for equal justice.  From due process to having a fair jury of peers, our system has come a long way from its roots in Mother England.

The key word in "assuring equal justice for all" is the assurance.  According to the dictionary, assurance is confidence, certainty, a promise, or guarantee.  Here confidence is the best word.  We must have confidence in a legal system, confidence that we will be judged by our actions.  We must not be judged by our gender, skin color, or belief system.  Everyone is discriminated against in some different way because of the way our legal system is set up;  many flaws have surfaced.  Aristotle said, "Law is reason free from passion."  We must have faith and confidence in ourselves.

Justice is such an illusive concept.  One imagines the blindfolded goddess tipping the scales.  This was a Greek author's way of imparting a clear definition of justice.  Justice is getting what one deserves, what is right.  Honesty, compassion, and the will to do better is what we need to share with others.  All of these imply the idea that we are taking steps to becoming a better America.

Teacher Commentary

This 9th grade student has chosen a rather didactic style to clearly convey her ideas.  She leaves little room for misinterpretation.  Her argument is logical and straightforward.  The image in the last paragraph is salient.

This young lady should be complimented for relatively surface error free presentation.
