27th Annual Mathematics Symposium at Western Kentucky University

October 12-13, 2007 (starting Friday afternoon)

Theme:  The Science of Art and the Art of Science

REGISTRATION: at the registration desk at the meeting (registration is free).
(Deadline for submitting abstracts was October 1.)

SCHEDULE of the 41 talks:  Click Here

Organizers:   David Benko, Dominic Lanphier and the Mathematics Department.

Featured Speakers:

Dr. Bart de Smit (Universiteit Leiden)

               Escher and the Droste effect

Dr. Bart de Smit obtained his PhD in Berkeley in 1993. His research focusses on the area of algebraic number theory, where he is mostly known for his contributions to the 1995 Springer volume on Wiles's proof of Fermat's Last Theorem. He has won prizes for teaching and for research and he has held a number of research grants in the Netherlands.  He currently leads a Research Training Network consisting of 12 European research institutions in 9 countries sponsored by the European Union.

               Dr. Stan Wagon (Macalester College)

Frozen Math: Sculpting Interesting Surfaces in Snow

Dr. Stan Wagon, who studied at McGill and Dartmouth, is professor of mathematics at Macalester College. He has written many books on subjects ranging from the Banach-Tarski Paradox to high-precision numerical computing, as well as almost 100 papers, several of which have won writing awards. His current interest is in the use of computing throughout mathematics. He is also interested in mathematically inspired art and construction: his work on a square wheel bicycle earned him an entry in Ripley's Believe It Or Not.

Many 20 minute talks will be given on mathematics, art and science, and related topics. The talks can be expository, historical, research related, or education related. Student presentations are especially welcome.

We have funds for student travel!
