Organizers: David Benko, Peter Sepanski and the Mathematics Department. Featured Speakers: Joseph Gallian (University of Minnesota Duluth) Touring a Torus Using groups and graphs to create symmetry patterns Dr. Gallian is Distinguished Professor of Teaching and Professor of Mathematics at University of Minnesota Duluth. His research interests include group theory and graph theory. He has authored or co-authored 4 books, published 90 journal articles, and supervised over 110 papers written by undergraduates. He is currently President-Elect of the MAA. He has received numerous awards, including those for teaching and contributions to undergraduate education. Larry Schumaker (Vanderbilt University) Spline Functions and their Impact Dr. Schumaker is a Stevenson Professor at Vanderbilt University. His research areas include approximation theory and computer aided graphical design. He is an author or co-author of 37 books or proceedings. He has been the advisor of 21 Ph.D. students. Dr. Schumaker has won the Alexander von Humboldt Prize and he has been elected a foreign member of the Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters. Please help spread the word that we would like to have faculty and student presentations, and we will have funds for student travel. Presentations will be approximately 20 minutes and can be expository, historical, research related, or education related. Check out what happened at the 2005 Symposium!
